Background of the Study
Emergency nursing is a demanding and high-pressure area of healthcare, requiring nurses to respond quickly to critical situations, including trauma, accidents, and sudden illnesses. In resource-limited settings, such as Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Yola, emergency nurses face significant challenges that hinder their ability to provide optimal care. These challenges often include limited access to medical supplies, equipment, and inadequate staffing, which can affect the delivery of timely and effective care (Mohammed & Lawal, 2023).
Emergency care nurses in such settings are frequently confronted with an overwhelming caseload, a lack of advanced medical technology, and poor infrastructure. Despite these barriers, emergency nurses in resource-limited settings must ensure they maintain a high level of patient care and manage life-threatening conditions with limited resources (Salihu & Kaka, 2024).
Understanding the challenges faced by emergency nurses in these settings is essential for developing strategies that can mitigate these barriers and improve patient care. The study will focus on identifying the specific challenges faced by emergency nurses at FMC Yola and exploring how these challenges affect the overall quality of emergency care.
Statement of the Problem
Emergency nurses at FMC Yola are faced with a myriad of challenges in delivering effective emergency care. These challenges include insufficient medical supplies, inadequate training, limited infrastructure, and understaffing, all of which contribute to the high stress levels and job dissatisfaction among nurses (Zubairu & Shehu, 2023). Despite the critical importance of emergency care in saving lives, these challenges limit the ability of emergency nurses to deliver the highest standard of care. This study seeks to examine these challenges and their impact on emergency nursing practices at FMC Yola.
Objectives of the Study
1. To identify the challenges faced by emergency nurses at FMC Yola in delivering care.
2. To assess how these challenges affect the quality of emergency care at FMC Yola.
3. To recommend strategies to overcome these challenges and improve the quality of emergency care at FMC Yola.
Research Questions
1. What are the key challenges faced by emergency nurses at FMC Yola in providing effective care?
2. How do these challenges affect the quality of emergency care at FMC Yola?
3. What strategies can be implemented to mitigate these challenges and enhance the quality of care in the emergency department?
Research Hypotheses
1. Emergency nurses at FMC Yola face significant challenges that hinder the delivery of high-quality care.
2. The challenges faced by emergency nurses significantly affect patient outcomes in the emergency department.
3. Implementing targeted interventions will reduce the challenges faced by emergency nurses and improve the quality of care provided.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on the emergency nurses at FMC Yola and the challenges they face in providing emergency care. It will not include other healthcare workers or facilities outside FMC Yola. A limitation of the study is the potential for biases in self-reported data from nurses, and the study's results may not be generalizable to other hospitals in different regions.
